The blaze started around 5:30 am in an electronics goods warehouse at 26, Ezra Street. It quickly spread because of the presence of highly combustible materials. The closely packed nature of the surrounding commercial area also contributed to rapid spreading. Preliminary reports suggest an electrical short circuit have been the cause, though a formal investigation is pending.
Kolkata Fire News: Firefighting Operations and Control
- Deployment: At least 20 fire tenders and 9 water jets were pressed into service to combat the rapidly spreading flames.
- Containment: Ranvir Kumar is the Director General of the West Bengal Fire & Emergency Services. He confirmed that they eventually brought the situation “under control.” The fire was “confined.”
- Challenges: Firefighting efforts faced severe hindrances. The narrow lanes of the Ezra Street market were obstructive. Massive plumes of thick, black smoke emanated from the burning electrical and electronic goods. Firefighters utilized a “smoke sucker” to aid in ventilation and access.
- Impact: Around 300 shops were gutted in the inferno. This dealt a significant blow to the business community in the Burrabazar and Ezra Street area.
Kolkata Fire News: No Casualties Confirmed
Authorities confirmed that all individuals in the vicinity, including those staying in adjoining buildings, were evacuated to safety. “There is no loss of life here,” stated DG Ranvir Kumar. The early hour of the incident, when most shops were closed, is believed to have prevented potential casualties.
Kolkata Fire News: Concerns Over Safety Standards
The incident has reignited concerns about fire safety compliance in Kolkata’s old, densely packed commercial hubs. Local councillor Santosh Pathak criticized the authorities’ “callous attitude.” He claimed he had repeatedly flagged poor safety standards in the building over the years. Still, no remedial action was taken.
