In his address at Ranaghat, PM Modi combined a developmental agenda with sharp political rhetoric aimed at the state’s administration.

1. Infrastructure Revolution (NH-34)

The PM inaugurated the four-laning of the 66.7-km Barajaguli–Krishnanagar section of National Highway-34 and laid the foundation stone for the Barasat–Barajaguli section.

• Kolkata to Siliguri: These projects are critical links for the North-South corridor, expected to reduce travel time between Kolkata and Siliguri by nearly two hours.
• Economic Impact: He emphasized that better roads would lower vehicle operating costs and boost trade with neighboring countries.

2. Political Critique

PM Modi did not hold back in his criticism of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC).

• “Loot and Intimidation”: He stated that the “misrule” and “intimidation” by the TMC have crossed all limits, causing residents to suffer despite central welfare schemes.
• BJP as the “Only Hope”: He positioned the BJP as the sole alternative for the people of Bengal, specifically mentioning concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

The Assam Leg: Guwahati’s New Landmark

Following his Bengal visit, the Prime Minister moved to Assam to strengthen the “Gateway to the Northeast.”

• New Terminal Building: He inaugurated the state-of-the-art terminal at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati. He noted that this would significantly improve “Ease of Living” and boost tourism.
• Fertilizer Unit: He laid the foundation stone for a 12 lakh MT-capacity fertilizer unit at Namrup in Dibrugarh to support the region’s farmers.
• Honoring History: He unveiled an 80-foot-tall statue of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi and is scheduled to pay tribute to the 860 martyrs of the Assam Movement.

It is worth noting that just yesterday, December 19, the PM addressed the Second WHO Global Summit on Traditional Medicine in New Delhi. He emphasized that “restoring balance” in health is a global urgency and showcased India’s leadership in blending traditional Ayurveda with modern science.
