🚄 Sleeper Vande Bharat Hits a Snag: Launch Postponed Despite In-Principle Approval
The much-awaited debut of India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper train, earlier hinted for an October launch, has been delayed. The Railway Board has granted in-principle approval for the operation of the 16-car rake. But, this sanction comes with a list of essential rectifications. These must be addressed first.
The delay is primarily due to furnishing and workmanship issues. The Railway Board recently communicated with the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO). They also addressed railway zones about these issues.
Key Issues Highlighted: Vande Bharat Sleeper Train
- Berth Finishing: Concerns were raised over sharp edges and corners in the berthing areas.
 - Maintenance & Cleaning: Specific features, termed “pigeon pockets” between berth connectors, were pointed out as potential hindrances to effective cleaning.
 - Fixtures: Issues were noted with the design of window curtain handles.

The Board has directed that necessary corrective measures must be taken on the current prototype rake. Design improvements must be incorporated into all future rakes.
Safety & Operational Directives: Vande Bharat Sleeper Train
Even with the design feedback, the Railway Ministry has strongly reiterated the compliance requirements for the train to start service, focusing heavily on safety:
- Kavach 4.0: Mandatory fitment of the indigenous train protection system.
 - Communication: Ensuring a suitable and reliable communication system between the loco pilot, train manager, and adjacent station master.
 - Emergency Preparedness: Training loco pilots to uncouple the semi-permanent coupler within 15 minutes in emergencies. The required tools are provided in the driver/guard tool kit.
 - Fire Safety: Strict adherence to fire safety protocols.
 - Comfort: Maintaining suitable temperature settings inside coaches, considering ambient conditions and door usage.

The final operational clearance depends on the Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety (CCRS) giving final approval. The RDSO must confirm compliance with all observations made during trials. The route for the first services is yet to be finalised and communicated to all zones.
