Violence in Hooghly: Bengal Imam Association condemns violence in Hooghly

There was a clash between ISF workers and police in Furfura Sharif. The conflict started over the formation of the Panchayat Board.

Indian Secular Front (ISF) workers and police clashed on Thursday at Furfura Sharif in Hooghly district. The Bengal Imams’ Association condemned the violent incidents and urged the state government led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to handle the situation with “more compassion and responsibility”.

MD Yahiya, president of the Bengal Imam Association, said that the incident that happened yesterday in Furfura Sharif is a matter of anger. “The Bengal Imam Association is condemning the incident. At a time when India is trying to position itself against the BJP, the handling of the Furfura Sharif incident by the state government is painful,” he said.

Violence in Hooghly: MD Yahiya said, “We are worried that dangerous politics may emerge in the near future.”

He accused the police officers of mishandling the incident and appealed to the government to “handle the situation with more compassion and responsibility”.

Indian Secular Front (ISF) workers and police clashed at Furfura Sharif in Hooghly district. The conflict started over the formation of the Panchayat Board.

Reports indicate incidents of bombing and brick-throwing in the area. An Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) is also reportedly among those injured in the clash. The police had to use tear gas shells to disperse the crowd and control the situation.

Violence in Hooghly: Of the 29 panchayat seats in Furfura, the Trinamool is said to have secured 24, while the alliance of the CPI(M) and the ISF managed to win five.
