Host China made a promising start at the Hangzhou Asian Games, taking its medal tally to double digits less than 24 hours after the competition was declared open.
The 19th edition of the Asian Games officially kicked off with a spectacular opening ceremony at the Olympic Sports Center Stadium in the south-eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou on Saturday.
Chinese President Xi Jinping was among those in attendance at the 80,000-seat venue and declared the Games open on Saturday in a ceremony that featured lights and sound but used eco-friendly alternatives instead of firecrackers. The organizers decided to introduce concepts such as 3D fireworks and a digital torch bearer.

Asian Games: Roshibina Devi leads India to bronze medal in Wushu
India was assured of another medal at the ongoing Asian Games on Monday as Naorem Roshibina Devi qualified for the semi-finals in the women’s 60 kg Wushu (Sanda) event, ensuring her a bronze medal.
She convincingly defeated her opening opponent Aiman Karshiga of Kazakhstan in the quarterfinals.
Roshibina Devi is the bronze medalist of the previous edition in Jakarta in the same category.
India, whose publicity campaign for the Games promises a ‘sau paar’ (over 100) medal tally, has so far won 11 medals, including two gold, three silver and six bronze. The shooting trio of Mehuli Ghosh, Ramita Jindal and Aashi Chowksey opened India’s account with a silver medal in the women’s 10m air rifle team event on Sunday (September 24).
